Theodosius Cistern History
Another name of this place (Theodosius Winder) between the years 428-443 Byzantine Emperor II. It was built by Theodosius to provide water storage through the Bozdogan Arch. The cistern is even older than the oldest cisterns in Istanbul, such as the Basilica Cistern and the Binbirdirek Cistern. On the cistern is the Arif Pasha Mansion built in 1910 and the old building of Eminonu Municipality in the 1950s.
The restoration of the Cistern, which has been completed and put into service, is expected to host many local and foreign tourists, and it is also planned to host organizations and cultural events.
Restoration work started in March 2010. These works, which started with the demolition of the former Fatih Municipality additional service building, were finally completed and Istanbul Governor Vasip Sahin, Mayor of Istanbul Mevlut Uysal, Fatih Mayor Mustafa Demir, IBB Culture As. General Manager Kemal Kaptaner and many citizens.
The opening was made with Iranian artist Ahmet Nejat’s exhibition named “Nothing Status“. In the exhibition, the golden sphere and the text eyen ‘Love and Nothing’ surrounding the sphere, the sound design consisting of Mevlana Celalettin-i Rumi’s poems and the words reflected on the water were presented to the visitors.

Visiting Hours: Theodosius Cistern is open between 10:00 and 19:00. You can always visit the cistern, which is also open on holidays.
Entrance Fee: The entrance fees of the Cistern are; For Turkish citizens; 15 LIRAS. For foreign tourists; 30 LIRAS. designated.

Reaching by Metro When you get on the Metro, you can get off at Aksaray stop and take the Eminönü Tram line, after arriving at Sultanahmet stop, you can walk to the cistern for about 5 minutes.
